Ups and downs prepare the team for sections

The boys’ soccer team aims to cap off a successful season with a winning streak in sections.

Varsity sophomore offender Miguel Ocampo said the team is gearing up for success.

“We’re starting to practice harder and we’re thinking more about what we’re going to do and how we’re going to succeed,” Ocampo said.

Sept. 27 the boys beat Benilde St. Margarets 4-2, but lost to Richfield Sept. 30, 2-0.

Head coach Chato Alvarado said he sees the loss to Richfield as a wake up call.

“We have been inconsistent. We played a great game against Benilde and won, but played poorly against Richfield and lost. The score is going to take care of itself, but if the team plays the best that they can I am happy,” Alvarado said.

Although Alvarado said he sees Richfield as a tough loss, the boys are still contenders for the title of conference champions. Additionally, they are expected to provide tough competition to opposing teams in sectional playoffs, according to Ocampo.

“I think we’ll learn from the mistakes we’ve made and the losses we’ve had,” Ocampo said. “As for our better games, we will continue to work as a team and do the same things [that have made us successful].”

The team will host Chanhassen Oct. 2, completing its regular season. The team will have a week off prior to the beginning of sections, and will utilize the time to adequately prepare according to Alvarado.

“We’ve been talking about sections for awhile. We’re getting mentally ready, but we won’t do anything drastically different,” Alvarado said.

Pending the completion of their regular season games, the boys will receive their schedule and seedings for sections from MSHSL.
