As junior Kamil Mayfield looks forward to the coming games, she hopes for a good outcome for the varsity team because of the increased amount of experience under players’ belts.

“I think we’re going to have a better season than last year because we have more experience now,” Mayfield said.

JV coach Derrick Turner said the team is continuing to develop, but has high chances of having a successful season.

“So far so good. Right now it is a work in progress, but it is very promising,” Turner said.

Sophomore Lindsey Olson said many changes have been made to the program in hopes of improving the team.

“We have an assistant varsity coach which is different from last year and then a new JV coach,” Olson said. “We have new coaches and we have a different offense and plays.”

Turner said the players this year are looking to get better and prepare for future success.

“There are more promising girls that are looking to get better as a player and as a person and also looking to play this game outside of high school,” Turner said.

According to Olson, the varsity team has a good chance of winning their games since the opposing teams have a similar skill level.

“I think it’s going to go well because they’re kind of the same skill level as us so it might be a good season,” Olson said.

Mayfield said the varsity team is different because of the new players and the new practice methods.

“We’re going to have two eighth graders playing varsity,” Mayfield said. “We’ve been running through plays, practicing pressing the ball in and stuff like that.”

According to Olson, the new plays and players will help the team have a good season.

“We have different players, we have new players coming in, and we have different offense,” Olson said. “It’s good, It’s definitely better than how it was going last year.”

The next girls’ basketball game is at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in Fridley.
