Despite the snowy weather outside, Park’s boys golf team has been busy preparing for their upcoming spring season. On March 27, the team met for their first official practice at Inside Edge Golf. After finishing practice, junior Vas Gaponenko said that although Inside Edge Golf simulators provide a space for the team to practice, it isn’t as helpful as playing outside.

“It’s fun to just come out swinging the club a few times even if it’s not the most realistic setting,” Gaponenko said. It’s more beneficial to go out outdoors and hit balls, but the environment doesn’t allow it at this time of year.”

According to coach Dan Becker, the first few practices tend to be more about team bonding rather than getting good at form, especially when they are held indoors.

“I don’t know if they necessarily will improve their swing very much with the limited time that we have here,” Becker said. “However, I do think that the camaraderie piece is way more important.”

Senior Teddy Dahlin said he thinks that throughout practices and during the season, weather could be an issue and possibly affect matches.

“I think the biggest challenge we will face during the season is the weather, because there’s still snow on the ground and throughout the spring it can be very rainy as well.” Dahlin said.

Becker said that he’s looking forward to the large group of kids that have decided to do golf this year, but also said it could be a challenge trying to fit them into spots on the JV and Varsity teams.

“We have about 45 golfers coming out this year, so I’m looking forward to seeing them be able to go out and play and have some fun,” Becker said. “Trying to determine a varsity and JV team will be difficult just because there are so many great players this year compared to what we’ve had in past years — there’s just a lot of good players instead of one or two or three.”

Dahlin said the practices are enjoyable, but he is ready to get onto the course with the rest of the team.

“I think the indoor practices are fun — they’re well done and a fun and competitive way to bond with the team,” Dahlin said. “I can’t wait to get on the course though, I’m looking forward to having fun with my friends and the captains this year.”

Gaponenko said he is excited for the upcoming season, and is looking forward to improving on his skills within the sport.

“I’m just looking forward to getting better, making improvements and making some friends,” Gaponenko said. “I’m excited to get out there and grind every day, but I’m ready for it.”

Boys’ golf’s first match will be held at 11:00 a.m. At Bluff Creek Golf Course.
