After taking a loss to the Red Knights April 27, assistant coach Rob Anklam said they are looking to improve on defense for the future.

“It’s early in the year so defense is really hard,” Anklam said. “We got a little lost on defense on occasion, and that’s partially because they’re really good on offense, so we got mixed up here and there but we can work on it throughout the year. “

Junior co-captain Meg Ridgway emphasized they need to keep everyone positive.

“We try to remind everyone that we’re all one team and negativity is only going to hurt us,” Ridgway said. “We have to focus on working together and being positive to keep the team morale high.”

Junior co-captain Margaux Pollock said she thinks that defense is a key factor that they need to work on.

“(We need to work on) being more field aware, being more aware of your surroundings, looking more into the middle when you’re on attack and really focusing on being aware and aggressive while on defense,” Pollock said.

Anklam said he believes that the team has been good at ground balls but still has some work to do.

“We’re going to  look at switching up some of our defensive mindset like to start schemes and different things that we’re going to do on defense,” Anklam said. “We were really good on ground balls, so we’re going to try to maintain that.”

Pollock believes that team morale is a key to think about during games where they are falling behind.

“Making sure everybody still has a smile on their face and if someone starts to get chippy with another teammate we have to remember just to be nice to everyone so we keep on playing our hardest,” Pollock said.

Looking at the team’s future, Anklam said that the team will only improves as they move through the season.

“Experience is going to be a big thing. We have a lot of players that are now getting into lacrosse deeper than they had been before. This is like the second year that they’ve been at that level. It’s going to take games and I think we need to hold on to the ball longer, that’s the key,” Anklam said.

The next game for girls lacrosse is at 1:30 p.m., April 29  at Saint Michael-Albertville High School.
