Park’s boys ultimate frisbee team defeated St. Paul Central Oct. 7 with a score of 13-3. This was their third reported win of the season and a great response to a hard loss against Mounds View last week.
Park’s offense started out with fast points that ended with completions for goals. Senior Parker Knudson said he and senior Aidan Shafton performed very well together.
“I connected with our star player Aidan Shafton and went four for four on deep throws to him,” Knudson said. “More than one of them ending up in a goal for the team.”
Coach Claire Cech said they played well and got good exposure for all of the new players, but they can always work on their offense.
“One thing we can work on is the timing of cuts,” Cech said. “We talked at halftime about how some of the cuts are a bit slow when turning from offense to defense and it would help a lot with transition offense.”
Knudson said they needed to improve their offense right after transitions, and they made a lot of slow cuts.
“We need to learn how to set up our offense better after we get a stop and learn how to cut earlier to take advantage of it,” Knudson said.
Junior Henry Horstman-Olson said the implementation of a new zone defense helped them win the game.
“We ran a zone defense which worked really well against this team and we hope to keep using it in the future,” Horstman-Olson said.
Cech said their zone defense worked really well for them today and helped them to knock the disc to the ground or intercept the frisbee.
“The team played a pretty good zone defense, we had a lot of generated Ds from the good positioning in zone defense,” Cech said.
Horstman-Olson said while their defense went well, St. Paul Central had a few good players who were able to work their way through the zone defense.
“I think they had a few handlers that were able to work really well through the beginning of the offense and put a few points on the board,” Horstman-Olson said.
Crush competes next at 12:00 p.m. Oct. 7 against Maple Grove at Lake Nokomis Park.
