According to senior captain Mackenzie Evenson, the varsity volleyball team performed a lot better than last year, leaving with a season record of 16-11.

“The season went really well; it’s been the best in like 20 years,” Evenson said.

Junior Taylor Ewald said she thinks the varsity coach, Whitney Meierotto, contributed to the team’s success.

“(The coach) helped us,” Ewald said. “She made us believe in ourselves that we can go in and win games. Even if we really don’t feel it, we thought it.”

The team also had a low-stress year and enjoyed playing together, according to Ewald.

“Because we were having a lot of fun and we played together, there was no drama,” Ewald said.

Next year, Evenson said she thinks the team needs to improve on working together and giving everyone opportunities to step up.

“For next year, I would say (we need to) work on communication on the court and taking more leadership for other people,” Evenson said.

According to Ewald, the girls bonded and got rid of old cliques to unite the team. She also said she worked on skills she wanted to improve.

“I feel like, for me, I improved a lot of the things that I wanted to improve on and then for our team, we jelled as a team and we became one,” Ewald said. “Last year, we had little groups and cliques.”

The team lost against Bloomington Jefferson 3-0 Oct. 29 at its last sections game.
