According to sophomore Izzy Segal, getting input from a different coach will be a change for the upcoming season.

“I think it’s gonna be nice to kind of have a change since I’ve had the same coach since eighth grade,” Segal said. “I know Jones pretty well, and he has walked rounds with me, so I think it will be good.”

Coach Kevin Jones said he switched from boys’ to girls’ golf because he was looking for a change.

“I had worked with last year’s senior class of boys. I had been with them since seventh grade and they graduated, and I was looking for a new opportunity,” Jones said.

According to junior Charlie Harper, Jones will be missed, but the team is glad he will still be around coaching the girls.

“I will miss Coach Jones and so will the rest of the team. Luckily we will still be able to see him around,” Harper said. “It is also understandable that he wanted to take a head coaching job, and I wish him the best of luck.”

Because she didn’t make it to State last year, Segal said her objective is to qualify this year.

“I just wanna get better, and my goal is to go to State because last year I was so close but I choked,” Segal said.

Jones said he is looking forward to coaching different people compared to his past experiences.

“I am looking forward to working with young ladies. I have a daughter now so I am looking forward to working with a different gender,” Jones said.

Harper said Jones was a important part of the team and brought positive energy to matches and practices.

“Coach Jones brought great energy to the team. All four years I’ve played golf, he has been great to have around,” Harper said. “He also always was willing to help with anything anyone on the team needed. He was very encouraging and did a great job as our coach.”

Jones said the girls’ golf season starts March 18 with indoor practices until the team will be able to get outside.

“We will do some dome time, and then hopefully the spring will be nice enough for us to get out onto real grass by early April,” Jones said.
