Halfway through the boys’ tennis season, team captains Robert Perelman, Marcus Hosfield, James Vournakis and coaches organized a fundraiser to raise money for the team and to spend time with the community, according to varsity coach Greg Holmbeck.

“We want to play tennis on a beautiful day and invite the community out,” Holmbeck said. “We have a lot of great young men who are playing and it’s an opportunity to show how great they play tennis and also how they do stuff for the community, as well as raise money for the boys’ tennis team.”

Senior Ava Jacobson who played for the girls’ tennis team this fall said the May 7 fundraiser was a great way to have fun and bond with other players, as well as raise money for the team.

“A lot of people want to participate in something like this, especially adults and their kids,” Jacobson said. “It’s a really good bonding experience for everyone.”

Sophomore Brennan Anderson said coming into a match with little experience playing tennis was difficult, but he was able to enjoy the fundraiser while supporting his friends on the team.

“Me and (my partner) lost our first two games to two varsity athletes,” Anderson said. “I wasn’t sure I wanted to come, but it ended up being a lot of fun.”

Holmbeck said there are many other ways to support the team, but the most important way is to just come to matches.

“Coming out to watch matches is really great. When we get people from the community to come out and watch, whether it’s JV or whether it’s varsity, it’s a great way to get involved,” Holmbeck said.

Jacobson said that not only was the fundraiser a great way to get the community involved, but for her, it was a nice end to her high school experience.

“It’s just a good way for me to end off my senior year,” Jacobson said. “Coming together to enjoy playing a sport that we all equally love.”

The next boys’ tennis match will be at 4 p.m. May 11 at home against Richfield at St. Louis Park High School courts.
