Boys’ golf participated in the third Metro West Conference match against Benilde St. Margaret’s, Chanhassen, Chaska, Orono, Waconia, Jefferson and New Prague on May 8. Senior Miles Rider said the outcome of the match was unsatisfying but would help improve team morale.

“Even though we didn’t do too well I think that this match will help us as a team to do better,” Rider said. “Hopefully we can all find ways to practice, mentally prepare some chips, and then come in tomorrow feeling good.”

After the match, Coach Dan Becker said he noticed some things that the team could be working on.

“They could definitely be practicing their short game, even though it’s not as much fun as hitting a driver off the tee every time,” Becker said. “Taking some time, putting in the effort, into working on their short game and putting will make a world of difference.”

Sophomore Micah Schoenberger said that getting a lower score has more of an impact on morale compared to receiving a higher one.

“When we shoot a score that ranges from 70 to 80 we tend to have more motivation throughout the rest of the match,” Schoenberger said. “I shot an 85 which was about what I expected so it doesn’t make me upset.”

Becker said despite them needing to work on some aspects of their performance, the team is still positive throughout the match.

“They just need a little bit of practice on their short game, but besides that they’re having a good time playing with other schools and other players,” Becker said. “Just from that perspective, I know that they’re enjoying the game. Which is nice because I want them to have a good time out on the course.”

Rider said he thinks the team could use a bus to get to matches, and that having to drive to the golf course can affect in-game performance.

“All of us individually had to drive 30 minutes out to McCone using our own gas on our own dime,” Rider said. “I didn’t have time to eat my lunch and had to change in the parking lot. I was coming into the first tee a little rattled so I think if we had a bus we would come into matches a lot more prepared.”

Becker said even though the team didn’t come out on top, everyone still enjoyed their time at the match.

“We may not have played our best today but overall, I think it was a good match,” Becker said. “We have a solid team, the weather was beautiful and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.”

Boys’ golf’s next match is at 2:00 p.m. May 15 against multiple schools at Oak Ridge Country Club.
