After the girls hockey team ended its season with a 5-3 against Buffalo, coach Ryan St. Martin said the game showed the progress the girls made throughout the season.

“This season has been great to see the progress of the team over the course of the last three months,” St. Martin said. “They’ve really come a long way and stuck together over some challenging times.”

Senior captain Greta Betzer said ending her high school hockey career was a bittersweet experience, but she is happy how the season ended.

“I’ve always had a blast playing hockey, it’s my favorite thing to do ever and it’s really sad that it’s coming to an end,” Betzer said. “(But this game) ended up being one of the best games we ever played, we all just wanted to show out.”

Freshman Rowan Jansen said she is grateful for the seniors she has played with and that they have helped her get through tough times on the ice.

“(I look up to) Greta Betzer and Emelia Johnson, they’ve always been there for me when I’m struggling in a game,” Jansen said. “Everyone has come together and we are like family, all together we played really well.”

According to St. Martin, he is proud of the determination of the girls and ability to persevere through the difficult games.

“I’m super proud of their compete level and their ability to overcome adversity as a team, (while) also being there for each other,” St. Martin said. “We were able to get our first conference win in the last four years. This is a great high point for the senior class to go out on.”

Although Betzer said the team had a good season, they didn’t win as much as they would have liked to.

“We didn’t win very many games, I wish we would’ve,” Betzer said. “(But) it doesn’t really matter about winning or losing, the team made it really fun.”
