Choir director John Myszkowski said his favorite aspect of Park’s upcoming production of “Sweeney Todd” is the diversity of the songs.

“(I like that) the tunes are catchy, dramatic, darkly funny, and it has moments of uplift & fear,” Myszkowski said.

Myszkowski said he believes students will enjoy the production because of the complexity of the writing.

“I think the students will be subconsciously astounded at what a master Stephen Sondheim is at weaving & tying together the text and music throughout the entire show,” Myszkowski said.

Sophomore chorus singer Caroline Garland said she thinks the musical will be a hit for all ages.

“The music is aimed towards an older audience and has a lot of humor adults would recognize,” Garland said.

Myszkowski said Sweeney Todd meets all of the criteria he uses when picking a musical.

“I look at shows that have importance or significance in the history of musical theatre,” Myszkowski said.

Sophomore cast member Aaliyah Johnson said she thinks the students will be entertained while watching the production.

“The characters are more lively than the last musical,” Johnson said.

According to Myszkowski, the students may find the music emotionally challenging and difficult.

“Watching students grow vocally and musically as they work through this, and grow intellectually and emotionally as they work through the symbolism, metaphors, and history of the piece will be really exciting,” Myszkowski said.

The production of Sweeney Todd will start at the end of February and continue into the beginning of March.
