After becoming conference champions at their game against Benilde Oct 5, the boys’ varsity soccer team has been on a winning streak in the Sections tournament.

The team won their first Section game against South High School 4-2 in a penalty shootout and triumphed against Washburn with a final score of 3-1.

Senior Alex Peterson accredited senior goalkeeper William Phelan with success in the shootout because of his saves against two players from South.

“We put a lot of trust in our goalie, and he pulled through. For our shooters, the only person who looked like he was a little nervous was Alex Ruiz and he took care of business,” Peterson said.

Assistant head coach Pat Hartman said South appeared to be the stronger team in the first half of the game.

“I was hoping our players would come out a little harder and stronger. They did later in the match but it would have been nice to do that from the beginning,” Hartman said.

Junior Isaak Kimmel said despite the downpour at the game against Washburn on OCt. 14, the team was able to stay ahead.

All of our shots were really fast, it was kind of hard to control the ball. It was super cold, so that made it harder to play,” Kimmel said.

According to Kimmel, the team was able to substitute many players because of the equal skill level among the team.

“Our team stands out from other teams because we have really good depth. We can always sub because we always play at the same level,” Kimmel said.

According to Kimmel, the team developed a strategy concerning their formation to take on Washburn.

“We played five (players) in the back instead of two in the back because (the opposing team) really played on the outside, and that helped a ton,” Kimmel said.

According to Brown, fouling and controlling the ball was a struggle during the game.

“We needed to make sure defense was extra strong. Chato (Alvarado) always says, ‘you only need one goal to win,’ so as long as we get one goal and we keep the momentum, we should be okay,” Brown said.

Park will play in the Section finals at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Wayzata High School.
