The late snow and cold weather has continued to delay the boys’ golf season, including forcing the cancellation of a tournament in Wisconsin, which would have included play at well known golf courses, according to head coach Mike Okey.

“(The tournament) was cancelled due to snow,” Okey said, “It’s unfortunate, because it always beneficial to go play in tournaments at top notch courses like Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits.”

Senior Otis Walvatne said the trip was an experience the team was looking forward to, and the cancellation of the Wisconsin tournament was a disappointment.

“The cancellation of the Wisconsin tournament was a big loss for are team because it was a winnable tournament for are team and the courses that we would be playing are some of the nicest in the Minnesota Wisconsin area,” Walvatne said.

Walvatne said that in addition to the cancellation of the team’s trip to Wisconsin, the weather has continued to delay outdoor play.

“When the weather acts like it has been acting this spring, living in Minnesota, it is a huge disadvantage for improvement at golf, because a big portion of improvement comes from putting in time outdoors on actual courses,” Walvatne said.

Okey said that although practices at indoor golf domes and simulators are not substitutes for playing outside, both serve as beneficiary opportunities for practice. He said that although the weather is detrimental to the season, the team will have to wait until it warms up to play.

“As with that tournament, we will miss many matches due to the late winter. All we can do is bide our time and wait for courses to open,” Okey said
