Looking at the over 100 students who were inducted into National Honor Society April 27 adviser Jill Merkle said what they all have in common is that they are dedicated to their community.

“They are a group of students that have been just really good community members and are now focusing on giving back to the community,” Merkle said.

According to 2018-19 National Honor Society (NHS) president junior Ayanna Nathan, service is at the core of the organization.

“The overall idea is to serve the community. That is really the basis of NHS,” Nathan said.  “To get the letter you have to have a high GPA, but to stay in the organization you have to volunteer.”

Nathan said in order to be inducted into NHS members have to complete certain tasks that give back to the community.

“To be inducted you have to do 30 hours of individual service hours, three group projects and show up to meetings,” Nathan said.

According to Merkle, the students who get inducted need to uphold the pillars of NHS and be leaders in school.

“All the kids that are inducted have shown the four pillars of NHS. Those are honor, scholarship, service and leadership,” Merkle said. “And they have gotten all the requirements for NHS, so they have maintained good grades, been in general good kids and good leaders in their classes.”

After being inducted into her new position, Nathan said she is looking forward to stepping into her new role.

I’m excited to be a part of things. I am excited to make some changes, I think NHS is wonderful, but there are definitely things that I want to change,” Nathan said. “I am excited to be a senior and be in charge.”

Merkle said she is looking forward to watching the new officers lead the group and watching the group give back to the community.

“I am really excited about next year’s officers, I think they are going to be really awesome leaders and that they have some really cool ideas,” Merkle said. “And I think that this group in general is just a really good group, so that should help next year be great.”
