Science Museum hosts annual female-focused event
Girls and Science seeks to inspire a love of science in girls

Careers in science, technology, engineering and math have traditionally been associated with men, but a Science Museum of Minnesota event in partnership with Fox 9 is trying to change that.
On Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Science Museum of Minnesota and Fox 9 will host their annual Girls and Science event to encourage female involvement in the sciences.
Kim Ramsden, Director of Communications for Science Museum of Minnesota, said she thinks the event inspires young girls to pursue science-related careers.
“There’s still a lot of perception out there in society […] of the Albert Einstein science. So when you think of science, you think of a man in a lab coat, but that’s obviously not the case, and if we don’t engage all young people in science, we’re going to lose out and miss out on a lot of brain power,” Ramsden said.
Freshman Tyanna Whitfield said she thinks it’s important to promote science education for girls.
“Girls can do anything guys can do, so if they’re interested in [science] they should totally go ahead and try out for it,” Whitfield said.
While the main focus of this event is science education for girls, the event isn’t just restricted to that demographic.
“This event is really fun and exciting because it’s a chance for girls and really boys and anyone of all ages to do hands-on activities in science and math,” Ramsden said.
These hands-on activities include dentistry simulations, interaction with medical devices, pig hearts, and an opportunity to do a weather forecast with a greenscreen and other meteorology technology.
