Macy’s flower show blooms
Annual flower show prepares for theme
March 14, 2015
Macy’s annual spring flower show premieres at the end of March, where the entire eighth floor of the popular department store in Minneapolis transforms into a floral extravaganza.
Macy’s in Minneapolis partners with Bachman’s to prepare for this event and is one of five locations partaking in the annual flower show, alongside New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Chicago.
Each year the theme of the show is different. In past years themes such as, “The Painted Garden,” “Brasil” and many more has amped up the popularity of this event. In recent years over 65,000 people have attended the two-week event.
This year’s theme is “Art in Bloom” showing Mar. 22 through Apr. 4 at Macy’s Minneapolis location.
This show features a variety of flowers, landscape and architecture. The show is open to the public and free during Macy’s store hours, 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. on weekdays, Saturday 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sundays 12 p.m.-6 p.m.
Senior Mikka Schacherer said the event has been something she looks forward to ever since she was a young girl.
“I heard about the flower show when I was around five years old and it has been something I’ve looked forward to because it means that spring is near,” Schacherer said.
Schacherer said she enjoys the tradition and capability of Macy’s to put this event together.
“I think it’s cool how they are able to transform a floor of a building in the middle of the city into a natural space filled with flowers and natural living things,” Schacherer said.
The show will incorporate art from a variety of genres such as works of impressionism, renaissance, surrealism and many more into the 11 featured gardens according to Macy’s press release.
Famed artists such as Picasso, Michelangelo and da Vinci will be represented through each garden.
Spectators will be welcomed into the show by an interpretation of the famous David sculpture, created by Michelangelo. This sculpture will be used to project moving geometric and floral designs and patterns as the center piece for this event.
