Greeks share tradition with the community
Greek Fest features culture, community service
Last year, the Greek Fest sold more than 2,000 dinners, 300 salads, 2,000 orders of french fries and 2,000 spanakopitas and tyropitas.
“Taste of Greece” gathers authentic Greek food, music and culture near Lake Calhoun during Labor Day weekend every year for the past 27 years.
Katherine Boosalis, head of marketing for the event, said there will be many different activities to enjoy at the festival.
“There will be series of cultural events, tutorials on food, guest speakers, church tours, Greek boutiques and more,” Boosalis said.
According to Boosalis, the event seeks to share Greek customs with the community and to provide community service.
“We have this festival to outreach to the community and share our culture, heritage, music and food,” Boosalis said. “It’s also for community service. We collect goods and donate to the food shelf each year.”
According to Boosalis, people who bring three nonperishable food items for donation to a food shelf will receive two free food tickets in exchange.
Senior Elena Basil said she enjoyed the Greek Fest last year and plans on going again this year.
“I loved the food, especially the gyro. It was a very cool experience with street dancing, greek music and culture and stands that presented ancient Greek artifacts,” Basil said.
Boosalis said she encourages students to attend the Greek Fest because it provides an opportunity for them to enjoy and experience a different culture.
The Greek Fest will take place Sept. 11-13 at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis. Boosalis said it’s open to everyone interested in a new cultural experience.
