Review: Monsters in Minneapolis

Guillermo del Toro at the Minneapolis Institute of Art

Screenwriter, director and novelist Guillermo del Toro came to Minneapolis to witness the opening of his exhibit “Home With Monsters” at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA).

This exhibit at the Minneapolis institute of art displays del Toro’s  amazing works, as well as some of the things he’s collected from movies and shops. This exhibit goes in depth into del Toro’s life, from early childhood until now.

The MIA exhibit looks like it was orchestrated by del Toro himself. It stays true to the eerie, yet elegant style of his work, toying with death and the underworld. It’s truly a del Toro experience.

The display remains true to del Toro’s Hispanic background and shows how his hispanic roots affected his work. For everything that’s in English, there’s a Spanish version to accompany. Representing how much detail the crew really put into respecting del Toro’s hispanic culture. The design team didn’t fail to leave anything out;this exhibit is truly an experience.

If you don’t know who del Toro is or what he is about, the MIA exhibit is very educational and will show you in an entertaining way who he his and why he has such dedicated fans. His work is dark, but almost like the imagination of a child, and that’s what makes it so interesting. This exhibit will at times make you giggle and at others give you goosebumps. It’s a perfect mixture of light and eerie, but overall it’s just a beautiful mixture of film, art and sculptures.

The work of this exhibit is not meant to be glanced at but taken and closely observed. “Home with Monsters” at the MIA is a great exhibit for all, not just fans of del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro “Home With Monsters” will be available for viewing at the MIA until May 28.
