Attention-grabbing performances take over the 2018 Billboard Music Awards
Artists convey important messages onstage
Despite being an award show, the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, which aired on May 20, was jam-packed with throwback performances from artists like Janet Jackson and Salt-N-Peppa. However, the highlight of the show was the acknowledgement of the current events and gun violence happening nationwide.
Kelly Clarkson introduced the show by pushing for actual change for families impacted by gun violence, instead of merely thoughts and prayers. Clarkson’s empowering speech hinted at a very impactful performance by Shawn Mendes and Khalid of their new song “Youth”. Parkland choir students joined the two pop artists towards the end of the song to help convey the song’s message. “Youth” is full of important lyrics and reflects the view of a young teenager witnessing the current events such as gun violence in today’s society.
This year’s show also featured many women artists, starting with Ariana Grande, who madea creative entrance by descending from the ceiling upon floating umbrellas. Clarkson, who hosted the award show, sang a crazy mashup of some popular songs such as “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” by Shawn mendes and “Havana” by Camila Cabello.
Demi Lovato and Christina Aguilera performed their new collaboration, “Fall In Line,” off Aguilera’s upcoming album. The two iconic pop stars sang with almost perfectly matching voices and sass which call for strength to young women.
Janet Jackson gracefully accepted this year’s Billboard Icon Award, and performed some of her pop anthems, keeping the show interesting for audiences. Salt-N-Peppa also brought back some of their girl group classics and lifted the audience.
The Billboard Music Award show gave out deserving awards and the show ran smoothly with inspiring and moving speeches from big artists who touched on mental health, women empowerment and gun violence.
