TikTok is an app for people to upload videos of themselves lip-syncing to songs or to watch other people’s short videos, according to The Verge.

According to CNBC, the app was made in September 2016 by the company ByteDance. It originated in China where it is referred to as Douyin and is very popular.

TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly, was similar in almost every way as the company was bought out by ByteDance, according to Slate.

Sophomore Cristina Garcia Virgen said changing the app’s name was unintelligent and the app itself is foolish overall.

“I think the app is stupid. I don’t know why they changed it to TikTok, it’s the same thing,” Virgen said.

According to The Verge, in November 2017, the app Musical.ly merged into the TikTok app. Users’ old videos from Musical.ly were transferred to TikTok.

ByteDance chose to bring the two apps together for better performance and TikTok was a more suitable choice, according to Reuters.

Sophomore Dario Cordova said he enjoys using TikTok to record himself singing and thinks the app is amazing.

“I have so many videos of me singing,” Cordova said. “It’s the greatest thing ever.”

According to DMR, TikTok now has over 500 million users worldwide.

Freshman Amal Abdi said she has noticed the traction TikTok has received and thinks the app is embarrassing.

“I have heard about it, and I think it’s cringey,” Abdi said.

TikTok is available to download for free on both iPhones and Androids.
