‘Kamikaze’ fires shots
Eminem’s newest project turns heads
September 29, 2018
Eminem’s 10th and latest studio album “Kamikaze” is lost somewhere in between his original pump up sound with a powerful flow, and the latest electronic trap music style.
Starting the record off with “The Ringer,” Eminem takes shots at current artists in the rap game and society. The tempo barely picks up making it a boring listen at first, but Eminem’s flow brings a dull beat to life.
“Not Alike” sends heat to fellow mainstream rapper Drake by recreating a similar beat to his recent hit song, “Look Alive.” The track’s opposing sound to any of Eminem’s past work makes the song an interesting listen initially but overall leaves it less than desired.
Songs like “Lucky You” and “Venom” hold similarities to Eminem’s past work and are great additions to anyone’s workout playlists. “Lucky You” features artist Joyner Louis and adds an interesting layer to the song by taking the first verse, then finishing up the song with Eminem, unlike traditional rap feature placements.
Kamikaze includes two short skits called “Paul” and “Em calls Paul,” which are intended to give some sort of backstory to the album, but instead end up being a waste of time and an immediate skip.
With the electronic beat and strange flow, “Normal” is another item of the album I end up skipping. Eminem complains about the women in his life and wishes they were normal, but I prefer not to listen to someone complain.
“Stepping Stone” brings me back once again to Eminem’s classic style. With an interesting intro and upbeat sound, I’m sure I will find myself listening to this song regularly. “Kamikaze,” “Fall” and “Normal” hold the album back from being cohesive. They don’t exactly reach the well-known Eminem style but don’t seem to match current styles either, narrowing the likeability of the songs.
With a few diamonds in the rough, “Kamikaze” is not Eminem’s best work. It lacks a united sound and doesn’t highlight Eminem’s typical powerful flow.
