I’m not typically a pop music fan. I usually find the lyrics cheesy and surface-level with no depth to the music. So, when my sister said she wanted to go to the Sabrina Carpenter concert, I wasn’t very ecstatic. I didn’t know many of her songs, but I did recognize her from Disney, so I was willing to go for my Sabrina Carpenter-obsessed sister. I went in with no expectations, completely blind. What I found, however, was an extremely fun night with an amazing singer, mesmerizing dancing and a beautiful set.
Walking to our seats, I was met with an enchanting voice. I came to realize this was the opener, Amaarae. From the very first song, I was enticed. Her beautiful singing was accompanied by one dancer, moving around her with gorgeous and hypnotizing movements. Amaarae’s style is unique. It pulls from rock, while also including some classic R&B choices. Her high pitched singing voice was complemented by heavy guitar and drums. Amaarae’s music differs from Carpenter’s, but their humor and personality match perfectly. They are both hilarious, very engaging and I can’t wait to see more from Amaarae in the future.
After Amaarae finished, it was another 45 minutes before Carpenter came on stage. The wait did feel long, but the background music that was playing made the wait bearable. Right before Carpenter came on stage, a video of her in a bathtub, rushing to get ready was playing. Carpenter then rushes on stage in a glittery towel, removes it and shows her sparkly attire for the evening. Each show has a vintage, loungewear theme to it; filled with pink, glitter, bows and kisses, embracing the ‘girliness’ of her music.
As soon as Carpenter came on stage, the entire stadium erupted. She opened with the song “Taste,” and I was surprised to even know it. I’ve heard her songs all over TikTok without realizing it was her. The entire venue erupted in song, every fan singing along, including myself. It was a beautiful moment seeing a stadium filled with girls, singing along and having fun, without a worry in the world.
Another thing that surprised me about the show was how elaborate it was. It wasn’t just Carpenter on stage with a guitar, there were dancers and the set was designed to look like an apartment. A fan isn’t just paying to see a concert, they are paying for a production. The set was beautiful, taking aspects from a 1960’s NYC apartment. It was cozy but glamorous.
Apart from the amazing atmosphere, Carpenter’s voice is magical. I didn’t fully understand how incredible and ethereal her singing voice is. Carpenter’s range is crazy, going from the lowest notes to the highest within a matter of seconds. Every song, I found myself in awe, just staring in amazement of the talent in front of me. Not to mention, her music is incredibly catchy. The day after, I caught myself singing to myself or humming a tune from the night before.
Even if someone isn’t a fan of Carpenter’s music, she is impossible to dislike. She was incredibly involved with her audience, reading signs, chatting with fans in the front row, even sketching the next tattoo for a fan. She constantly was cracking jokes, all of them made me giggle like the fan girl I was becoming. By the end of the night, I understood why she is so loved. Her voice, personality and kindness all make her an idol to so many girls. She is not afraid to express her ‘girly’ side while also being extremely confident. By the end of the night, I learned something. If you are given the chance to go to a concert or event, take it. You may find yourself dancing along to your new favorite song.
