The new horror-suspense film, “Time Cut,” was released on Oct. 30 as a Netflix original. In this movie, the main characters were played by Griffin Gluck, Antonia Gentry, Madison Bailey and Megan Best. The cast was small, but the people they chose to play in this movie and these characters were good choices made by director, Hannah Macpherson.
“Time Cut”’s plot follows a teenage girl whose sister was killed by a masked serial killer. She accidentally travels backward to the year 2003, days before her sister was killed by the masked man. Some areas of the movie have a deeper and more mature plot line, and throughout there are intense themes and emotions played throughout. It also includes plot twists you wouldn’t necessarily expect. The film opens with an introduction to a girl, Summer Field (Antonia Gentry), and brings us through different characters that exist throughout both of the “realms.” Eventually, the plot brings us back to the present day in 2024. The movie contains many seemingly unimportant characters and leaves you wondering who the killer is until close to the end. As for the script, some parts were written better than others. It seems slightly cliche and copied throughout–as some people have noticed. The script was written well and had a lot of potential which was expressed mostly, but could have been better executed, while it was executed alright. Overall, the script is good.
The song “What’s Luv?,” played at the beginning of the movie, fits the situation they’re in–a party for the “Spring fling” dance. With all the teenagers, I think the vibe of the song fits. But the songs vary depending on where people are. When we get introduced to Summer’s old room, and when Summer goes to school on the anniversary of the deaths, “A Thousand Miles” plays, which is fitting for the melancholy that the scene sets. The soundtrack works with the different scenes throughout the movie. In other words, melancholy in sadder moments, tense music with suspenseful situations, etc. It’s important to note, overall some parts of the film don’t live up to its fullest potential and parts can be seen as cliche or predictable, but I liked the plot. The plot overall was good with the soundtrack adding to key emotions. It’s marketed as being scary–a horror. I wouldn’t say it’s terrifying, but it definitely had elements of panic to it. It’s also marketed as suspense, it has loads of that placed throughout.
Since this is based on high school students, they just wore normal clothes anyone would wear: such as t-shirts, jeans, pants and sweatshirts. The costumes added more realistic views to the movie. It wouldn’t seem as realistic if they wore the costumes we think of when we hear that word. When they’re at school they wear nicer clothes, such as a pleated shirt and dress pants. The costumes did a good job of being practical and logical for the style of the film.
This movie does a good job of bringing up the suspense and making you wonder who the killer is until the very end. It could have been executed better and lost interest partially through, but the plot had potential. The ending contained a plot twist that created an extra element of shock that boosted my enjoyment of the film. If you are a fan of plot twists or murder mysteries, “Time Cut“ is a good movie for you.
