The need for building upgrades causes problems for students

Closed for renovations, St. Louis Park Library, brings disappointment to students who spend time there over the summer. Students found it inconvenient to go to other libraries rather than the local one.

Junior Adelle Braman said she was one of the many to have problems with the library being closed and found it to be an inconvenience to go to other libraries.

“It was more convenient to go to this library instead of the Walker library in Uptown,” Braman said. “It was a little weird because I had to bike to the Walker instead, and that’s different from our library.”

Librarian Erin Dahl said the reasons behind the library’s renovations was the need for building upgrades and was mainly closed because of the HVAC (heating and air conditioning) unit.

“Our (HVAC) was not up to city code standards and needed to be replaced,” Dahl said. “While that is being taken care of, we are also getting a bit of a face-lift: new carpeting, fresh coat of paint, new furniture.”

During the time the library was closed, which was from July 28 to Aug. 29, patrons were mainly directed to Hopkins, Edina and Walker libraries Dahl said.

“I think Hopkins has gotten the majority of the St. Louis Park traffic so far, but I’ve seen a fair number of our regulars here at the Walker, too,” Dahl said.

Braman said she likes the changes in the teen section the best and it’s better than the old look, especially the set-up.

“It’s more open and it seems a little more relaxed,” she said. “I go to the library a lot so the changes seem good, especially the teen section, because it’s not so crowded anymore.”
