Olivia’s Oscar predictions

Academy Awards brings many great films and tough decisions

Olivia Sieff, Pop Culture Enthusiast

This is my favorite season of all time. No, not the cold, winter vortex that we are in currently, I mean Oscar season.

The Academy Awards, along with award shows in general, are my favorite TV event of the year. I do not just flip on the TV for this show. I watch the pre-Red Carpet, the Red Carpet, the actual award ceremony, and the after-show.

I watch every Best Picture nominee, every lead actor and actress performance, and everything in between, besides Best Foreign Language Film because I cannot stand subtitles. This makes me a self-proclaimed movie, or at least Oscar, expert.

Now even if you are not a movie junkie like me, I would at least hope you would want to know the predictions for the main categories. Even if you do not know your Bradley Cooper’s from your Benedict Cumberbatch’s. So for your consideration, here are my predictions for a few of this year’s Oscar categories.

Best Picture

Nominees:

“American Sniper”

“Boyhood”

“Birdman”

“The Grand Budapest Hotel”

“The Imitation Game”

“Selma”

“The Theory of Everything”

“Whiplash”

Will Win: “Birdman”

Could Win: “Boyhood”

Should Win: “The Grand Budapest Hotel”

While “Boyhood” has been on top this award season, “Birdman” is absolutely flawless. The cast and filming is captivating, plus who doesn’t love Emma Stone as a sassy drug addict. You will not want to stop watching this movie, trust me.

Best Director

Nominees:

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, “Birdman”

Richard Linklater, “Boyhood”

Bennett Miller, “Foxcatcher”

Wes Anderson, “The Grand Budapest Hotel”

Morten Tydlum, “The Imitation Game”

Will Win: Richard Linklater

Could Win: Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu

Should Win: Wes Anderson

I love Wes Anderson. He is a quirky genius and I cannot get enough of his films, but Richard Linklater will win for “Boyhood.” Linklater made a three hour movie on one family not only desirable to watch, but impossible to shut off.

Best Actor

Nominees:

Steve Carell, “Foxcatcher”

Bradley Cooper, “American Sniper”

Benedict Cumberbatch, “The Imitation Game”

Michael Keaton, “Birdman”

Eddie Redmayne, “The Theory of Everything”

Will Win: Michael Keaton

Could Win: Eddie Redmayne

Should Win: Eddie Redmayne

This is one of the toughest categories this year in my opinion. All the actors flawless depicted their respective characters, ranging from a soldier in the U.S. Army or a washed up actor. While Eddie Redmayne deserves to win for incredibly playing Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything,” Michael Keaton’s performance in “Birdman” will take home the Oscar. He captures your attention from the very first scene and doesn’t let you go.

Best Actress

Nominees:

Marion Cotillard, “Two Days, One Night”

Felicity Jones, “The Theory of Everything”

Julianne Moore, “Still Alice”

Rosamund Pike, “Gone Girl”

Reese Witherspoon, “Wild”

Will Win: Julianne Moore

Could Win: Reese Witherspoon

Should Win: Rosamund Pike

This category is easy, well as easy as the Oscars can get. Julianne Moore’s performance in “Still Alice” will win this year’s Best Actress category without a doubt. This if Moore’s performance of a lifetime and no other actress can compare with her, despite my love for Rosamund Pike’s impeccable job in “Gone Girl.”

Best Supporting Actor

Nominees:

Robert Duvall, “The Judge”

Ethan Hawke, “Boyhood”

Edward Norton, “Birdman”

Mark Ruffalo, “Foxcatcher”

J.K. Simmons, “Whiplash”

Will Win: J.K Simmons

Could Win: Ethan Hawke

Should Win: J.K Simmons

If J.K Simmons doesn’t win this category we should all just boycott movies from now on. Simmons delivers one of the most amazing performances of this year as an insanely intense music teacher alongside Miles Teller. Forget Ethan Hawke in “Boyhood,” this role is what careers are made of.

Best Supporting Actress

Nominees:

Patricia Arquette, “Boyhood”

Laura Dern, “Wild”

Keira Knightley, “The Imitation Game”

Emma Stone, “Birdman”

Meryl Streep, “Into the Woods”

Will Win: Patricia Arquette

Could Win: Laura Dern or Emma Stone

Should Win: Patricia Arquette

This year, Best Supporting Actress is a bit of a tough category. While any category with goddess Meryl Streep is always a tough one, this particular one puzzles me. Patricia Arquette’s performance in “Boyhood” was amazing and should win, but Emma Stone or Laura Dern could sneak in and take the statue out from under her. All the performances were stunning, but these three are currently tied for me.
