Math team hones in skills for next meet
Members learn from past, prepare for future
November 28, 2016
After graduating five seniors from math team last year, senior captain Kirby Goodman loves the energy new members have brought to the team this year.
“We had a lot of seniors graduate last year, but there are a lot of new good people that are coming on that are excited, which is good for the atmosphere,” Goodman said.
According to Goodman, the team performed at the level they typically do in their last meet Nov. 7.
“We performed about the same as we usually do,” Goodman said. “We usually get around fourth and we got fourth at this meet, but it’s a good starting point.”
Math team adviser Kristin Johnson said she was impressed by individual performances at the last meet, but feels team scores could increase.
“We did all right. Individually, we had some students that did really well. I would’ve liked to see during the team event us do a little bit better but overall I think they did well,” Johnson said.
Johnson said she feels students have potential to go to State based on success so far this year.
“We have some kids that did really well. If they continue to do what they’re doing, they’ll make it to State individually, which is awesome,” Johnson said. “I’d like to see the whole team make it to State, so we need to step it up a little bit, but overall I was impressed with some performances.”
According to Goodman, the team will have to improve its scores in order to make it to State.
“We definitely need to be improving on all of our performances in the next meets and just doing as best we can,” Goodman said.
Goodman said the team is preparing for the next meet Nov. 28 by reviewing concepts and choosing which eight of the team members’ scores will count.
“We went over the topics that are going to be covered and we decided who was going to be representing our team, whose scores are going to count and making sure we’re prepared by doing practices and having a captains’ practice this weekend to figure things out,” Goodman said.
The next meet takes place at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 28 at Armstrong High School.
