New store to feature Park pride

Apparel store House of Sport opens across from stadium

There’s a new house on the block.

House of Sport, a store that offers Park apparel recently opened down the street from the high school.

The store is located at 6414 W. Lake St. across from the football stadium, and provides students with a new place to embrace school spirit. It opened Aug. 25 in the space previously occupied by Jerry’s Do-It-Best Hardware.

1985 Park graduate Beth Hallfin owns the store. Her son, T.J., is currently a junior, and the family has lived in St. Louis Park for years. Hallfin said she is glad to have found such a convenient location.

“Being so close to the school makes it a perfect location,” Hallfin said. “The new turf is supposedly going to bring by more traffic.”

Sophomore Benny Burke said he enjoyed visiting the new store.

“It doesn’t have that big of a selection, but they do have some cool stuff, like drawstring backpacks and dress shirts with the Park logo that I haven’t seen anywhere,” Burke said.

As the Homecoming game approaches, junior Max Gamble said he will be glad to have a new source for sweatshirts and T-shirts.

“I think it will be a good addition to the area because it will sell more items and it will give the students another place to buy Park clothes,” Gamble said.

Hallfin said she hopes to use the Homecoming game to bring more attention to her business.

“We’re planning on having a grand opening the night of the game, and obviously being open all day,” Hallfin said.

However, Burke said he was concerned House of Sport will not be able to survive, because two similar sports apparel stores closed within the last two years in the same area.

“It probably won’t be successful, because Q & A Sports and 301 (Sports Apparel) were similar to it, and they both closed,” Burke said.

Hallfin said for now, the main focus is on the Orioles.

“We’re Park strong because of the beginning of the school year,” Hallfin said. “It’s a Park-friendly apparel shop.”
