New season brings questions and learning
Quiz Bowl players at Park began their season Oct. 4 with a mixture of questions and a blur of hands as players slap a red buzzer at the slightest inclination that they know the answer.
Sophomore player Simon Fruchtman said the key to the team’s success this season will be the increase in new members who have a spectrum of knowledge over a variety of subjects.
“This season we have a lot of newcomers. Everyone has their own areas of expertise, and when we all bring those to the table, we get balance but also goodness,” he said. “I think every year Quiz Bowl has the same general formula, but it’s kept interesting because every question is an adventure.”
According to senior participant Samantha Bremner, the reason people keep coming back to Quiz Bowl season after season is the team’s competitive yet light-hearted spirit.
“It’s just a really great group of people, no one takes it too seriously, so it’s still fun,” she said.
Senior captain Evan Hill said the true intent of Quiz Bowl is often misconstrued by people who think the club is merely about trivial facts, when in actuality, he said the intent of the team is to learn.
“It isn’t about being a genius, all you have to do is gather information. Reading a book, learning a new math theorem; literally any form of learning can be considered practice,” he said. “Everything from sports to English operas is fair game.”
Members hope to win titles in future tournaments and possibly advance to national level competitions, Hill said, but the best thing about the team is that students can come to practice any time they want.
“There’s no real commitment,” Hill said. “If you want to have a fun time then you can get involved.”
There is no deadline to sign up to join the team. Practices are every Thursday in room C375 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
