Ben and Jerry’s free ice cream is draw for students, families

Ice cream shop gives back to customers in welcoming of so-called spring

Despite the chilly outside temperatures and rain, students will stand in line for a free scoop of their favorite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream April 9.

The ice cream company with origins in Vermont, hosts an annual Free Cone Day as a welcome to spring for customers at all Ben and Jerry’s locations. Each year the designated day is popularized by a count down on the Ben and Jerry’s website and on social media sites such as Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #FreeConeDay. The Ben and Jerry’s website also offers a Twitter Poll to determine what the most popular flavor will be at each year’s free cone day.

Sophomore Caper Dennehy said he’s excited for free cone day because he attends the event with his friends.

The location of the ice cream shop allows for Park students to go with their friends after school “last year I went with my friends because Ben and Jerry’s is close to my house,” Dennehy said.

Dennehy, who said he looks forward to spending time with his friends outside of school said he is also excited to get a free scoop of his favorite flavor “Milk and Cookies”.

Senior Maddie Peterson goes to free cone day with her family and said she looks forward to meeting new people while waiting in line. The appeal of a free scoop of ice cream attracts customers of all ages to free cone day making it family friendly event, according to Peterson.

“The line goes out the door and takes a while to get into the store” Peterson said, “so it’s a good opportunity to socialize.”
