Yearbook seeks to increase sales by redesigning

Junior Amra Mucic said she doesn’t usually buy school yearbooks. This year, thanks to a major redesign of Park’s yearbook Echowan that is about to change.

“I haven’t gotten a high school yearbook yet,” Mucic said. “I’ll most likely get one this year though because I think the new design will be cool.”

Senior Mary Pavia, editor in chief of Echowan, said the idea to redesign the book came after an Echowan retreat this summer.

“After a three day yearbook workshop this summer that all nine of our editors attended, we decided to radically change the look and design of the 2013-2014 yearbook,” Pavia said.

Senior photo editor Ali Howard said she thinks the workshop gave the staff a new perspective on the importance of teamwork.

“We had to work together to come up with everything and had to agree on all the changes,” Howard said. “Without yearbook camp we wouldn’t have gotten anything done.”

Although only the editorial staff attended the workshop, Pavia said the newer staff members are also working hard to design the new yearbook.

“With our first deadline coming up on Sept. 26 and our first final deadline on Oct. 24, our minor staffers are definitely feeling the pressure and intensity of the publication,” she said.

Along with an overhaul of the book’s design, the Echowan staff is also working to improve on last year’s sales numbers.

“We hope to increase our number of books sold and we are trying to accomplish this by creating new sales tactics,” Pavia said. “(Senior) Thomas Djerf, our minor staffer in charge of sales, is focused in on this task.”

Students interested in purchasing a yearbook can stop by the Echowan room in B229 or talk to an Echowan staff member. Books are $65 if purchased before winter break, or $70 if purchased after winter break.
