Senior skip day proves its purpose
Teachers, seniors try to come to agreeing terms on Senior Skip day, a historical tradition
May 29, 2014
An annual tradition for seniors, students look forward to senior skip day throughout their high school career.
The cafeteria, usually full of seniors is not the same on senior skip day.
Empty desks, lunch tables and less rowdy halls surface the school.
The sign of seniors not showing up to school is enough for the school to know when Senior Skip day is.
The exact day isn’t scheduled or affiliated with Park, but is usually the day after Memorial Day or on the 114th day of school. Senior class of 2014 scheduled their senior skip day May 27, as a tradition from previous years.
Although, most teachers go along with the expected mass absences, other teachers aren’t the biggest fans.
Most teachers don’t mind the tradition, but are not as willing to bend their schedules according to seniors’ agenda. A block of seniors gone will leave any class behind significantly, especially if the class has students of other grades in them.
The teachers that do comply usually offer some extra credit or incentive to seniors who do come to school on Senior Skip Day.
Teachers who predominantly have seniors in their classes have a day to themselves or break of teaching for a short period of time.
Because it is such a long lasting tradition and the year is so close to a finish, threats to harm students’ grades don’t cross most seniors’ minds.
Despite the fact the school allows seniors to skip, seniors are not excused directly by the school.
Most seniors participate in the tradition, but other students will come to school to make sure all class work is up to date. Some students have too many unexcused absences or tardies already and cannot afford another unexcused.
Conflict with the practice has existed for years, and even though most teachers oppose the custom, senior skip day will most likely remain a tradition that future classes uphold.
