Meet the Mathlete: Zoe Leuthner
December 18, 2014
How do you prepare for a typical meet?
You are given your meet topic in advance so you can look it up and study before the meet.
What is your favorite part about being on the math team?
It’s really fun getting to challenge yourself and get yourself to think in new and exciting ways.
How do you feel about the new junior varsity events that people can compete in this year?
It’s really nice that our numbers have gotten bigger and it’s really allowing new mathletes to experience what a team event is like without the pressure of being on varsity.
What are your expectations this season?
Hopefully we will improve our standing [in conference] because we have more people and in past years we didn’t do quite as well. We usually get fourth in conference.
How is this year compared to previous years?
There are a lot more freshmen and underclassmen in general on the team.
What do you hope to improve on personally from last year?
I want to score higher at the meets and hopefully keep my average score high enough to get to state.
What made you want to join the math team?
It’s a really fun experience and a way to learn new things that you wouldn’t normally learn in class.
What is the hardest part about being on the math team?
It’s really hard to predict what type of questions you will be asked so you really have to prepare yourself for anything and you need to think a lot differently about problems then you are used to.
