With unity comes focus
Boys to men group builds on togetherness as they look toward to new year

Boys to men co-coordinator Chris Weaver sat at the round table in his room discussing with two male students their 2014-2015 NBA fantasy basketball league during fifth hour Dec. 16.
Sophomore Richard Green said these kinds of interactions are a main reason he continues to attend the bi-weekly Boys to Men circle.
“It’s really cool how Oscar and Chris are chill and easy to talk to, and it really helps to feel part of the group,” Green said.
Weaver, who has gone into his second year as co-coordinator of the Boys to Men group said aside from a couple disputes because of weekly fantasy trades, he notices the interaction that goes on between members of the group pays off when it comes to how they interact with each other at meetings.
“I really think the amount of interaction that these boys do outside the group discussions have led to more togetherness when we gather for Boys to Men,” Weaver said. “And that is our main purpose, because the circle is there to represent unity.”
Weaver said this unity has also translated into more facilitated expression of students’ feelings.
“Most of it just comes out, and it is usually anything, but the guys are always very mature about all of it, and do what they can to support each other,” Weaver said.
Although, according Weaver, the number of students attending the circle has been fewer than in past years, he said the numbers of students has sometimes made it easier for people to talk openly about issues.
“We have had a smaller group this year than typically, and so far we haven’t had any problems,” he said. “Having fewer people also makes it easier sometimes for people to come out about any issues they are having.”
Furthermore, like many people around this time of the year, Weaver has set hopes for the new year in terms of potential projects and experiences the group can participate in together.
“Following the New Year we are looking to do some kind of community work,” Weaver said. “A few of the ideas we have for the group is Feed My Starving Children, participation in a seminar, or group work with a public speaker, but those are just ideas right now.”
Overall, Weaver said the groups goal in the new year is to promote a further outreach of the group into the community.
“We wanna get these guys out there in the community, because it’s critical that high school students get that kind of experiences before they graduate,” Weaver said.
According to Weaver, the group plans to reconvene after break in C350, the date and time are to be determined.
