When senior Kate Duerksen found out she would be the very first one to fill in the new position of historian this year, she was overcome with excitement.

According to National Honor Society (NHS) adviser Jenny Magdal, NHS is starting very strong this year with more opportunities for members and new positions.

Magdal said she created more leadership opportunities for both members and candidate members.

“We are encouraging all current members to mentor a team of candidate members and we are also encouraging anyone with an idea of how to increase the positive community at school to share their idea to get it off the ground,” Magdal said.

Duerksen said her position is new to the club this year.

“Mainly my job is to keep track of all volunteer hours students must submit to be in NHS, and to keep track of the amount of group projects they do as everyone must do three,” Duerksen said.

The Character in Leadership summit will take place the first time this year Oct. 23-25 and all members must attend one of the days

Magdal said the summit will last two hours, with students practicing different leadership exercises.

“We will have many bonding, character-building and leadership-building activities for the students to participate in,” Magdal said.
