Jewish Student Union brings students together
Club discusses current issues on weekly basis
September 20, 2015
Every Thursday, the Jewish Student Union (JSU) gathers in Mary Norris’ room to discuss Judaism, issues among students, holiday experiences and any other topics students want to discuss. It is a safe place for everyone to go, regardless of religious affiliation, according to freshman Izzi Gilbert Burke.
“It’s a place where people can come to and not have to worry with any prejudice about religion,” Gilbert Burke said. “It’s also a time to relax and talk with people you are friends with, as well as make new friends.”
Junior Max Segal said he enjoys leading discussions and breaking the ice at the beginning of the meetings
“It’s fun to stand up in front of the room and talk to younger and older students about current issues involving Judaism or even how our days were that day,” Segal said. “It’s a good way to relax after a long day at school.”
During the Rosh Hashana meeting Sept. 17, Rabbi Tzvi Kupfer asked members if they celebrated in any certain traditional manner such as having the head of the fish at dinner, which symbolizes the “head” of the New Year.
Senior Shay Gilbert Burke said he attends the meetings every Thursday to talk to students and Kupfer, and to just relax after school. He said he enjoys the Kosher sushi Kupfer brings to share with the members.
“It’s a good way for everyone to have a quick snack before the lecture or meeting starts and it’s sushi, so who wouldn’t like it?” Shay Gilbert-Burke said.
The meetings all end with a quick prayer and time at the end for students to talk among themselves and ask Kupfer any questions.
The next meeting takes place Oct. 8 3:00 p.m. in Norris’ room B134.
