Club provides place to expand opinions
Welcoming environment to help members

As the members of the Sexual Health Education Club (SHEC) introduce themselves at their meeting, they share which pronouns they go by.
Senior president Hannah Heitzinger said at the last meeting Oct. 27, they discussed gender roles and sexual expectations.
“This topic is really relevant in today’s culture because how we perceive others is really important,” Heitzinger said. “It ties into sexual health with how people are expected to act.”
According to Heitzinger, the discussion went well because members participated and were able to share their opinions on the topic.
Adviser Allison Luskey said the topic was chosen for a reason.
“The students who lead the meetings get topics from the other members,” Luskey said. “Everything is student lead. The content, the discussion, it’s all coordinated or based off what students want to talk about.”
Sophomore member Olivia Massie said she attended the meeting to talk about gender roles and the how they play into society.
“It is important to break down the topics we discuss. In order to do that, we talk about it,” Massie said.
Heitzinger said the club tries to bring in new students because sexual health applies to everyone.
“We always want a variety of people because sexual health is relevant to everyone, not just one type of person,” Heitzinger said. “This is information you will need for the rest of your life. It matters to everyone.”
Luskey said the meeting was beneficial for students to talk about issues such as gender roles because it provides a safe place for a healthy discussion.
“Since the club is discussion based, it allows students to voice their opinions, and listen to those of others and their perspectives,” Luskey said. “It is such a good place for students to get their voice heard but also to form those opinions and practice using them.”
The club plans to discuss sexual relationships in the media at their next meeting 8 a.m. Nov. 10 in B112. The meeting will open with a video related to the topic to start out the discussion.
