Senior Bird Feeder manager Mackenzie Evenson busily prepares for Thanksgiving as the Bird Feeder anticipates events with the boys’ hockey team, a local church, and classes at the high school.

According to Evenson, the drive with the hockey team was added this year after parents of team members requested to help the food shelf.

“Some of the (hockey) parents wanted to help us over the winter,” Evenson said. “They don’t already charge admission, so if you could donate one canned food item (to go to a game), that would be helpful. I’ll be there at the games.”

Bird Feeder adviser Sophia Ross said because of success in the past, the Bird Feeder will also continue to work with local churches.

“We’ve worked with multiple religious organizations in St. Louis Park for the past three years,” Ross said. “It’s been really successful.”

Ross said having multiple drives, including the annual class competition, help the Bird Feeder increase their inventory in time for Thanksgiving.

“We’ll start promoting the (class competition) the first week of November and the drive will be the second week of November so we can get food in for the holiday,” Ross said.

Evenson said in past class competitions, the most successful class wins an ice cream or pizza party.

“Usually, what we’ve done in the past is a pizza party or an ice cream party,” Evenson said. “We haven’t decided what the reward’s going to be yet.”

Ross said English teacher Rose Korst’s class wins every year and encourages students to step up.

“We’re doing a class competition as well, the one that Mrs. Korst always wins,” Ross said. “Someone has to challenge her this year.”
