Junior Amanda Erdmann said she felt full of excitement on the first day of school. However, a schedule issue quickly turned her mood to frustration.

“I noticed that my history and calculus were incorrect and not in the same spot as they were on when I saw them on PowerSchool, so my physical schedule I got on the first day did not match the one I saw online. When I figured that out I went to the counseling office and they were able to help me,” Erdmann said.

According to counseling department head Barb Nelson, students may only request adjustments to schedules for certain specific reasons.

“Schedule changes will be made only if a wrong course appears, a class has been failed, a class is missing or there is a class conflict,” Nelson said. “Changes can’t be made for teacher or time of day preference.”

According to Erdmann, the counseling department easily switched her classes back to the correct ones, but she hopes she doesn’t have to deal with the same situation in the future.

“I’ve seen my second semester schedule on PowerSchool and I like it. I hope that it will stay the same,” Erdmann said.

According to Nelson, the heads of core subject departments meet to discuss student placement and balance at the start of each semester.

“If there are students that are struggling in geometry, for example, we switch them into a more supportive geometry class together,” Nelson said.

Nelson said although issues may arise in student scheduling, the department improved in making sure classes match original student schedules on PowerSchool.

“Over the past couple of years we’ve gotten better about looking at the whole year and trying to make changes, so most of the time if you do one thing, it impacts the other,” Nelson said.

According to Nelson, students can view tentative second semester schedules on PowerSchool and make appointments with counselors the week of Jan. 25-28 on a drop-in basis to make any necessary changes.
