When senior and co-leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Mackenzie Evenson thinks about the holiday season, she said she feels grateful for the people in her life and the belongings she has.

Former Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) adviser Elizabeth Yetzer Spehar said she and her family came to the club meeting Dec. 14 to speak to students about the meaning of the holiday season means.

When asked to be a guest speaker at the meeting, Yetzer Spehar said she thought it sounded like a wonderful opportunity to see the students again.

“Jessica Schmidt asked if I would be willing to come be a guest speaker and I gladly came,” Yetzer Spehar said. “It pumps me up to see a group of students gathering to explore and grow in their faith, and I really looked forward to seeing the students.”

Junior Samantha Baer said the club discussed a topic at the meeting that centered around the realization of hope during the holiday season.

“Thinking about hope around this time of year rather than despair was a cool thing to take a look at,” Baer said.

Baer said the meeting turned out a lot differently than other meetings because of the visit from Yetzer Spehar.

“I really enjoyed the meeting. I thought it was a lot different than what we usually do,” Baer said. “It was cool to experience something else.”

Evenson said she loved the way Yetzer Spehar and her family contributed to the meeting.

“I love Yetzer and how she brings such great energy to the table along with her husband who is always cracking jokes,” Evenson said. “Most of us can be very open with them because they like being there so much and just enjoy spending their time with us.”

Yetzer Spehar said she and the members discussed the reason for celebrating Christmas.

“We talked about having hope in our culture and in relation to the hope of the people involved in the story of Jesus’s birth,” Yetzer Spehar said.

Evenson said she enjoyed reading scriptures and having discussions with her fellow FCA members and Yetzer Spehar.

“The most important thing I took from Yetzer was to be thankful for what we have and having to celebrate Christmas with our families,” Evenson said.

Yetzer Spehar said she enjoyed seeing students who truly care about their faith.

“I felt super encouraged to see students eager to grow on their faith,” Yetzer Spehar said. “I had a new perspective on the true experience of those who were waiting for the birth of Jesus like the Shepherd, wise men, Mary and Joseph and Simeon.”

The next FCA meeting takes place at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 in room B112.
