Members explore culture through crafts

At their second meeting of the year, German Club members made gingerbread men to celebrate the German Christmas tradition, St. Nicholas Day, according to club advisor Shari Fox.

Fox said German Club expands on the curriculum taught in class through activities aimed at immersing club members in German culture.

“In class, you can never cook stuff or do crafts. It’s seldom you have time,” Fox said. “I have to (conduct) that stuff outside of the classroom and German Club is the place for that. The Germans are very crafty.”

Junior club member Emma Gruye said she enjoys German Club because it gives her a place to be with her friends while learning something new.

“German is my favorite subject and it gives me something to do after school. You get to hang out with your friends and learn about German culture and do fun activities,” Gruye said.

According to Fox, the club offers an opportunity to explore the language in a comfortable environment.

“It’s a good place for those students who are shyer. It’s a smaller group so they feel more comfortable trying out the language,” Fox said.

Senior Duncan Raynor said German Club would be beneficial for students to attend.

“My friends attend German Club and it sounds like a fun thing to do,” Raynor said. “It seems like a good way to learn more about German culture while having fun with your friends.”
