Quiz Bowl looks beyond State meet

Loss doesn’t deter from Nationals hopes

After a season of building a young team, Quiz Bowl failed to make it past the first round of State Feb. 18 in Burnsville, according to club adviser Peter Dangerfield.

The team lost by 20 points to Roseville and by a larger margin to Providence Academy before being eliminated, according to Dangerfield.

“It was a disappointing (finish),” Dangerfield said. “We lost pretty quickly over the course of the night.”

Despite this loss, however, Dangerfield said the losses were both fairly close and the team did well, playing as expected.

“They are a really good group and it was very competitive,” Dangerfield said.

Senior Maggie Coleman, who competed in the tournament alongside senior Jonah Kupritz and juniors Will Poulter and Nick Kasic, said the tournament was a fun way to end the regular high school season.

“We were all super excited and it was really great to get the opportunity to do stuff even though it was my first year,” Coleman said.

Following the State meet, the team began more serious discussions on sending a team to Nationals over Memorial Day weekend, according to Dangerfield.

“There is now rumblings that we will take a team down to Nationals in Dallas,” Dangerfield said. “We’re trying to get that off the ground.”

Dangerfield cited fundraising as the biggest hurdle the team faces on the road to Nationals, but looks forward to the opportunities the competition provides.

“I’d like to see how we’d compete with teams from around the country,” Dangerfield said.

The team’s next competition is Feb. 27 at Armstrong and consists of entirely pop culture-related questions.
