Jewish Student Union adviser Mary Norris said, for her, Jewish Student Union is not just a club.

“Jewish Student Union (JSU) is an affirmation of all things that are pertinent to the Jewish lifestyle,” Norris said. “It’s not just religion, it’s also the cultural aspects of Judaism, which influences the lives of Jews around the world.”

According to Norris, local Rabbi Tzvi Kupfer brings snacks and presentations to the club every week.

“He gives a meaningful presentation each week, and it’s something I look forward to,” Norris said.

Sophomore Ruthie Posada said she enjoys hearing Kupfer speak.

“The Rabbi who is there is just so lovely. He’s funny,” Posada said. “We talk about holidays, we do some activities (and) we eat sushi.”

Norris said her experience with advising the club has inspired her to further explore Jewish culture.

“Because of my JSU kids and everything they share with me, I’m going to Israel this November over thanksgiving. I’m so excited I can’t stand it,” Norris said.

Posada said she believes many of the activities at JSU are centered around Jewish values.

“We did an activity last time where we circled things that we look for in a friend,” Posada said.

Posada said although her attendance was infrequent in the past, she plans on attending as many JSU meetings as possible this year.

“This year I’m planning on going (to JSU) every week. It doesn’t take that long, we just meet in a room and talk about Jewish things and have a good time,” Posada said.

Norris said the club provides a very welcoming atmosphere for all students, and described its members as phenomenal.

“JSU is open not just to Jewish students but non-Jewish students as well,” Norris said. “Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.”

According to Norris, students interested in attending JSU can come to the club’s weekly meetings at 3:10 every Thursday in room A316.
