As the Roots and Shoots Boundary Waters canoe trip approaches, senior Adam Recknagel said he thinks about upcoming the adventure every day.

According to senior Lukas Wrede, the Boundary Waters is a good example of what the club is attempting to preserve.

“A lot of people in Roots and Shoots care about the environment, but they really haven’t had an opportunity to really experience what they’re fighting for,” Wrede said.

Junior Katie Christiansen said this will be her first trip to the Boundary Waters.

“I’ve never actually been up to the Boundary Waters before so the opportunity to go with one is a super cool experience (with) someone I trust, but also people in my age group,” Christiansen said.

Wrede said the trip is completely student run, similar to last year’s Boundary Waters trip.

“We did the same trip last year or a really similar trip last year and it went really smoothly,” Wrede said. “We have figured out our route, almost with exact campsites. We have all of our rentals figured out and our permits.”

According to Christensen the all-student aspect of the trip makes it more fun.

“Its more fun to go with a bunch of people that I’ve met before and am close with, but I think it’s a really cool opportunity to get closer to people doing something that we care about,” Christiansen said.

According to Recknagel, the students have included parents when planning the trip.

“We had a parent meeting as well where we debriefed the parents this year,” Recknagel said. “I’m excited to go and it’s been a while since I last went and I think about it every day, that’s not a lie.”
