New principal looks ahead to first year
Meyers brings fresh goals, philosophies
September 3, 2015
As freshmen begin their first year of high school, Scott Meyers looks forward to his first official year as principal.
Having acted as interim principal during the 2014-15 school year, in his new position, Meyers said he plans to make a few changes and apply his philosophies to the high school.
Meyers said, for example, sophomores can expect a change in the way their schedules are organized.
“We did a BARR (Building Assets and Reducing Risks) training, which is usually for our 9th grade block teachers. We decided to invite our 10th grade teachers,” Meyers said. “And we grouped our 10th grade students (into blocks).”
Meyers said he feels communication and teamwork between faculty are essential to helping the school run smoothly.
“Collaboration is very important to me. I tend to seek input from multiple parties,” Meyers said. “When I’m making bigger changes, I like to collaborate with the district office so we are all aware of what is going on. When I can, I love to work using student feedback.”
Meyers said he hopes students will keep the future in mind when learning.
“One of the things I’m happiest about is the conversations about career and college readiness,” Meyers said. “I appreciate this idea of preparing on a continuum from 9th grade all the way onto senior year rather than trying to get it all done the last two years.”
Junior Ernesto Garcia said he believes Meyers will do well in the position of principal, citing his previous work.
“Based on what I saw of his performance as interim principal last year, I think he’ll do a great job,” Garcia said.
Garcia said he thinks Meyers will benefit the student body through his work.
“I think he likes working with the students and staff,” Garcia said. “He’ll do a lot of good things for the school.”
Superintendent Rob Metz said he is excited to continue working with Meyers and is optimistic about the upcoming year.
“I look forward to working with Meyers,” Metz said. “He is a great person and that makes him very easy to work with.”
According to Metz, Meyers is well-suited for the job because of his previous experience at Park.
“He knows most of the students and he knows all of the teachers,” Metz said. “He knows a lot about the school already. He’s been here many years so that will be very helpful.”
