When senior Kaitlin Cole decided to go to Concordia College Moorhead, she knew she would need financial aid. Luckily, during school, she learned about an opportunity to help her.

Cole said her advisory teacher Mary Norris introduced her to the organization Dollars for Scholars, where she learned about the application process, which includes two questions and one teacher recommendation.

“I’m applying because I know the college I’m attending and I’m going to need scholarships so I’m hoping these will help me out,” Cole said. “I’m pretty much applying for everything I’m available for.”

According to counseling department head Barb Nelson, Dollars for Scholars is a St. Louis Park affiliate with Scholarship America, a foundation focused on student postsecondary success.

“All seniors are eligible to apply and we encourage that,” Nelson said.

According to Nelson, seniors can apply for multiple scholarships if they fit the requirements. She said a committee reviews the applications to determine who receives a scholarship.

“A committee here makes the selection which is made up of administrators, counselors and teachers that meet later on in April,” Nelson said.

According to Nelson, the money that makes up the scholarships comes from regional colleges, businesses and Park residents.

“We have about $80,000 worth in scholarships to award,” Nelson said.

Nelson said she thinks the scholarships provide a very important opportunity for seniors.

“It’s a recognition of your time in high school. We want a diverse group of kids to apply and that’s why we say anyone can earn these scholarships,” Nelson said.

Cole said she supports Dollars for Scholars because she likes what it gives to the community.

“It’s important so students can be recognized for all their hard work during high school and be able to have support going forward in their education,” Cole said.

Applications are due March 17 and the awards ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. May 25 in the old gym.
