Trump declares he is not a feminist
President misunderstand social movement
February 12, 2018
The president is once again mistaken about an issue related to women. President Trump has incorrectly defined a subject that affects everyone: feminism.
According to CNN during an interview with Piers Morgan on Jan. 27 the president made a peculiar claim.
“No, I wouldn’t say I’m a feminist,” Trump said. “I’m for women. I’m for men. I’m for everyone.”
But the president seems to be mistaken because feminism is for everyone. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of feminism is about equality.
“Feminism: the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.”
Feminism is not promoting the superiority of women over men. Feminists are simply fighting to provide women the opportunity to be equal to men.
Living in the United States, as a female, it is difficult to accept that the president does not seem to believe that people like me have worth. President Trump has made many misogynistic claims in the past, but the way he has blatantly rebuked feminism still cuts deep.
He is a role model for the entire country and has influence on the entire world. It is dangerous to cut down the power of women because it validates sexism.
President Trump makes it seem acceptable for employers, teachers and other people in positions of power to disregard women. It enforces the thought that men are superior even though he states he is “for” both men and women.
I do not believe that he is supportive of women and people of color. According to the New York Times President Trump’s cabinet will include significantly less minority groups than the past five presidents’ cabinets.
“Women and nonwhites will hold six of 24 cabinet or cabinet-level positions (…) those six members will also be in some of the lowest-ranking positions.”
This proves that President Trump does not see women as equal to men. Even though he is “for” both sexes he is much more likely to hire a man over a woman.
Trump sets a bad example for the nation and the world by denouncing feminism and underestimating the power of women.
