Junior Kamia Guy did not instantly recognize her passion for helping others when she decided to become Bird Feeder manager. Rather, Guy said her decision was involuntary.
“I first applied for Bird Feeder manager because I didn’t have transportation to my volunteering site. I needed to do some sort of community service in order to get credit for the class so I decided to sign up for the position,” Guy said.
Guy said she became more enthusiastic about her role as Bird Feeder manager when she recognized the difference she makes.
“I really started to become passionate about my position when I noticed how many students at our school are hungry. Even though we may not notice, there are many students that are struggling to find their next meal. The Bird Feeder is helping a lot of these students and their families,” Guy said.
Guy said her role as a Bird Feeder manager includes packing food bags and finding new ways the Bird Feeder can receive donations.
“My job as manager consists of creating food backpacks for students, updating our social media to keep people in the community aware of what we are doing, creating ideas for food drives, picking up donations and organizing the shelf,” Guy said. “It is a lot of work but it is also really fun.”
Guy said her favorite part of the job is packing food for students in need.
“My favorite part about being a manager is packing the bags, because when I pack the bags I know it’s going to a good cause and that makes me really excited. When I’m done packing a bag, I’m able to see that I have the power to help others,” Guy said.
Bird Feeder adviser Sophia Ross said Guy’s personality makes her a good Bird Feeder manager.
“Her attendance is great, which makes her reliable. She is compassionate and empathetic, she has a passion for helping people and doing the right thing. She is consistent and trustworthy,” Ross said.
