Almost beating Benilde, the number one team in the state and long-time rival, is something junior Bauer Neudecker will never forget.
“The best part of the season was our last game of the season playing Benilde. It was awesome playing in front of such a big crowd and almost beating the number one team in the state,” Neudecker said.
According to coach Terry Keseley, this is the first winning season the boys’ hockey team has had in all three years as head coach.
“We were 14-11 in our regular season which is even more exciting because we played some of the hardest teams this year for the first time,” Keseley said.
According to sophomore Willy Basill, the team fulfilled its goals.
“I felt I fulfilled my personal goals and I think that the team’s goals were met especially. We really learned how to play together and move the puck,” Basill said.
According to Keseley, the team prospered when attendance was high at big games.
“When we have high attendance at games, it’s exciting for the team and we tend to play better. I think that’s why we put up such a good fight against the undefeated Benilde,” Keseley said.
Although they experienced some tough losses, team members learned a lot this season, according to Keseley.
“We had a hard schedule that pushed the players,” Keseley said. “It’s not always about the wins and losses but how you carry yourself and how you come and compete and carry yourself with the program.”
Basill said the hockey program continues to grow and strengthen.
“We all are going to work really hard over the summer so we can come back next year even better. Our program has gotten really good this past year and we plan to add to that,” Basill said.
According to Neudecker, expectations are high going into next season.
“We want to win our conference and do better against better teams since our schedule will be getting harder since we are in the AA section now,” Neudecker said.
Keseley said the team looks forward to preparing for next season this upcoming summer.
“We have an opportunity to skate this summer and focus on getting stronger in the weight room which will really help all the players,” Keseley said.
