When junior girls’ lacrosse captain Talia Simonett heard of junior Sofia Roloff’s addition as a captain, she felt excited at the prospect of a new leader on the team.

“I’m really excited. I think she’s certainly dedicated to lacrosse and she’s a great leader,” Simonett said. “I think next year she was going to be captain either way, so I think it’s great that she’s going to have another year of experience under her belt.”

Roloff said she feels honored to be chosen as a new captain.

“I’m really excited and really grateful for the opportunity to have a leadership role on the team,” Roloff said.“I’ve been playing lacrosse since sixth grade now and it’s my third year on the team. I like to have the role of leading people and encouraging people and being someone that my teammates can look up to and come up and ask questions to.”

Girls’ lacrosse head coach Kyle Sweeney said she believes Roloff has the natural ability to lead the team.

“Sofia’s been on varsity for a couple years and even though she (was) not a captain she’s always been a natural leader,” Sweeney said. “She’s a leader on the field and she’s encouraging and she leads by example as well as leading by her voice.”

Simonett said having Roloff as a new captain will benefit the team.

“I think it’ll affect (the team positively),” Simonett said. “With me, Zoë (Eilers) and (Roloff) all being leaders, we all work greatly together and our leadership and dedication will work greatly for the team.”

Simonett said she believes the team will work better with three captains.

“I think two captains is hard, but with three captains you can balance out the work more because it’s a lot,” Simonett said.

Roloff said she will have more responsibilities as a captain.

“Obviously (captains have) the leadership role of taking charge and making sure everyone is on task and focused and as a captain you have to organize events and inform people (of) things we’re going to do as a team,” Roloff said. “(Captains have to) spread the word to the school about games and upcoming fundraising things for the team.”

Sweeney said the change in captains should go smoothly.

“I think it’s going to be really great,” Sweeney said. “There hasn’t really been any signs of a tough transition. The girls already respect Sofia and she stepped naturally into her new role.”

Roloff said she feels worried but excited for the new opportunity.

“I’m a little nervous,” Roloff said. “There’s going to be a bit of nerves but I’m excited to see our team develop through the season.”
