Park girls lacrosse faced up against Visitation High School May 18 in a head-to-head match. After a rough first half, Park managed to pull through in the second half and tie the game during senior night, managing to score a winning goal in the last few minutes and ended with a score of 13-12.
According to head coach Kate Pearson, the team’s chemistry and communication was what helped them succeed.
“We worked together as a team and played for each other instead of individually,” Pearson said. “Instead of just taking balls and trying to do things by themselves, they used the teammates to make plays happen, to work on defense and to turn balls over so that we maintain connection.”
Senior captain Meg Ridgway said since it was senior night, it inspired her to do well for the rest of her team.
“I really tried to put it all out on the field not only for myself, but for the team,” Ridgway said. “It’s senior day, so we wanted to win for everyone.”
Sophomore Lydia Anderson said she was proud of how the team played during the game.
“We did really well,” Anderson said. “It looked rough, but we did get a really good comeback at the end of the game.”
Pearson said the team should focus on communication to improve for their next match up.
“We still need to improve our communication on both attack and defense,” Pearson said. “We will focus on practice. We have a couple more practices and games before sections, and we really want to focus on game-like situations and practice them over and over.”
According to Ridgway, despite the win, she made a couple of mistakes that she wants to fix for future games.
“I had a couple of dumb shots throughout the game,” Ridgway said. “I could have just kept the ball on my stick and passed it off. I plan to keep working hard and keep practicing my passes.”
Anderson said there were both good and bad parts of her performance during the game.
“I did well with getting open and going for the ball, but I could (work on) going for ground balls more,” Anderson said. “Next game, I want to work on shooting more.”
Park girls lacrosse is headed to sections at 6:00 p.m. May 28 at Hopkins High School.
